Odelia’s next port of call was the school where Allison Spence had been a teacher. As usual Dooley and I rode in the back of her pickup as she navigated the streets of Hampton Cove. It didn’t take her long to arrive at her destination, but that time was enough for Dooley to develop an alternative solution for Lucifer’s problem.

“As I see it the problem is space, right?” said my friend.

“I suppose,” I said, still thinking about Krystal and Barry and wondering if they were safe.

“So guess where they’ve got a lot of space, Max?”

“I have no idea, Dooley,” I confessed.

“In space! There’s plenty of space in space!”

“Okay.”

“So what if we relocate the mice to one of those space stations that float around the earth? Or maybe we could even send them to the moon on the next mission? Or Mars! Lucifer and his family could repopulate the Moon or Mars or any planet for that matter. They could be the first space colonists. Now wouldn’t that be great? There’s plenty of space on the Moon, Max, and also on Mars. Or in one of those space stations. What is it called again? Um…”

“The International Space Station?” I suggested.

“Exactly! I’m sure they’ve got plenty of room for a couple of mice, and they’d be more than happy to supply it. So we could outfit all of our mouse friends with space suits and send them off on their mission. It’s going to be one small step for Lucifer but a giant step for all mousekind.”

“It’s an idea,” I admitted. Though not a very practical one, probably. For one thing, who was going to produce twenty million space suits? And for another, I didn’t think the astronauts who lived on the International Space Station would welcome the arrival of a couple of million mice. And also: what were they going to eat in space? Mice feed on bugs and such, and as far as I could tell there aren’t any bugs on a space station. Or on the Moon or Mars.

But Dooley was so happy with his idea that I didn’t have the heart to trample all over it with my arguments. So instead I merely smiled and said, “Sounds like a great plan, Dooley. You should suggest it to Lucifer next time we see him.”

“I’ll do just that!” said Dooley, very excited about his contribution.

We arrived at the school and we all got out of the vehicle. But before we could enter Odelia turned to us and said, “Maybe this is not such a good idea after all.”

“What isn’t?” I asked.

“Taking you guys in there. I don’t think cats are allowed in schools.”

“Oh, sure they are,” I said. “Schools have janitors, don’t they? And janitors sometimes live on the premises and often have pets. So you can simply pretend we’re the janitor’s cats.”

She didn’t seem convinced, but decided to go along with it for argument’s sake. “It’s just,” she continued, “that people always look at me as if I’m some kind of weirdo when I come barging in there with my cats.
