Odeliaâs next port of call was the school where Allison Spence had been a teacher. As usual Dooley and I rode in the back of her pickup as she navigated the streets of Hampton Cove. It didnât take her long to arrive at her destination, but that time was enough for Dooley to develop an alternative solution for Luciferâs problem.
âAs I see it the problem is space, right?â said my friend.
âI suppose,â I said, still thinking about Krystal and Barry and wondering if they were safe.
âSo guess where theyâve got a lot of space, Max?â
âI have no idea, Dooley,â I confessed.
âIn space! Thereâs plenty of space in space!â
âOkay.â
âSo what if we relocate the mice to one of those space stations that float around the earth? Or maybe we could even send them to the moon on the next mission? Or Mars! Lucifer and his family could repopulate the Moon or Mars or any planet for that matter. They could be the first space colonists. Now wouldnât that be great? Thereâs plenty of space on the Moon, Max, and also on Mars. Or in one of those space stations. What is it called again? Umâ¦â
âThe International Space Station?â I suggested.
âExactly! Iâm sure theyâve got plenty of room for a couple of mice, and theyâd be more than happy to supply it. So we could outfit all of our mouse friends with space suits and send them off on their mission. Itâs going to be one small step for Lucifer but a giant step for all mousekind.â
âItâs an idea,â I admitted. Though not a very practical one, probably. For one thing, who was going to produce twenty million space suits? And for another, I didnât think the astronauts who lived on the International Space Station would welcome the arrival of a couple of million mice. And also: what were they going to eat in space? Mice feed on bugs and such, and as far as I could tell there arenât any bugs on a space station. Or on the Moon or Mars.
But Dooley was so happy with his idea that I didnât have the heart to trample all over it with my arguments. So instead I merely smiled and said, âSounds like a great plan, Dooley. You should suggest it to Lucifer next time we see him.â
âIâll do just that!â said Dooley, very excited about his contribution.
We arrived at the school and we all got out of the vehicle. But before we could enter Odelia turned to us and said, âMaybe this is not such a good idea after all.â
âWhat isnât?â I asked.
âTaking you guys in there. I donât think cats are allowed in schools.â
âOh, sure they are,â I said. âSchools have janitors, donât they? And janitors sometimes live on the premises and often have pets. So you can simply pretend weâre the janitorâs cats.â
She didnât seem convinced, but decided to go along with it for argumentâs sake. âItâs just,â she continued, âthat people always look at me as if Iâm some kind of weirdo when I come barging in there with my cats.
